Business Visa

What is a Business Visitor Visa?

Canada is one of the world’s largest economies, attracting thousands of international business visitors each year. A Business Visitor Visa allows individuals to travel to Canada for short-term business activities without entering the Canadian labour market.

In many cases, eligible business visitors can enter Canada without requiring a work permit, depending on the nature of their activities and nationality.

Who is Eligible as a Business Visitor?

To qualify as a business visitor to Canada, applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Plan to stay in Canada for less than 6 months
  • Do not intend to enter the Canadian labour market
  • Main source of income and business remains outside Canada
  • Have supporting documents for their visit
  • Meet basic entry requirements (passport, funds, admissibility)

Applicants must also show they will leave Canada after their visit and are not a health, criminal, or security risk.

Who is Eligible as a Business Visitor?

To apply for a PGWP, applicants must meet certain conditions set by immigration authorities.

You must have completed a full-time academic, vocational, or professional program of at least eight months at a recognized Designated Learning Institution (DLI). The program must result in a degree, diploma, or certificate.

Applicants must also provide:

  • Official transcript
  • Completion letter from the institution

Additionally, new rules require proof of language proficiency:

  • CLB 7 for university graduates
  • CLB 5 for college graduates

Some programs and institutions may no longer be eligible based on updated policies.

Permitted Business Activities

Business visitors can travel to Canada for various professional activities, such as:

  • Attending meetings, conferences, or trade fairs
  • Buying goods or services for a foreign business
  • Taking orders for products or services
  • Providing after-sales service (non-construction work)
  • Receiving training from a Canadian company
  • Training employees of a Canadian branch of a foreign company

Visa Requirements

Depending on nationality, business visitors may require:

  • Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), or
  • Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

These documents allow entry into Canada for business purposes.

After-Sales & Service Work

Some specialized service activities may still qualify under business visitor status:

  • Repairing or servicing equipment
  • Supervising installation or setup
  • Software installation, upgrades, or training

These services must be part of an original sales or service agreement and must not involve hands-on construction work.

When a Work Permit is Required

Not all business-related activities qualify under the visitor category.

You may need a work permit if:

  • You are entering the Canadian labour market
  • A Canadian company is directly paying for your services
  • Work is outside warranty or service agreements

In such cases, a work permit and LMIA may be required.

Important Considerations

Canada encourages international business travel to support economic growth and global trade partnerships.

  • Ensure all documents are complete and accurate
  • Clearly define the purpose of your visit
  • Follow all immigration and entry rules

Failure to meet requirements may result in visa refusal or entry denial.
